Hanti: „We must remember the Holocaust, but not with whitewashing Horthy!”

At the demonstration against far right Holocaust-deniers, which was organized by the Antifascist Network on November 23 in the Józsefváros district, the President of MEASZ (Hungarian Federation of Resistance Fighters and Antifascists) Vilmos Hanti held a board where the following phrase was written – “We must remember the Holocaust, but not with whitewashing Horthy! Professionals to the Holocaust-remembrances!”

Replying to our question, the president said that it is important for future generations to remember the utmost horror of the twentieth century, the Holocaust. However since this, around six billion Hungarian forints accounted project, is planned to be implemented by the current government, Hanti does not expect much from it. With the realization of this overreaching concept a broad national unity should be created. To achieve this, those affected should be involved on a wide basis, not to mention those Holocaust experts who were excluded from this project.

In the present situation Hanti presupposes that “the whole investment tries to excuse Horthy’s sinful policy in a kitschy obscurantist way which could even go as far that in the end the Russians would become responsible for everything, even for the reason that Hungary had to attack the Soviet Union”.  Moreover if such a big investment is started with the money of the taxpaying Hungarian citizens, it would deserve to present the broadest circle of the Holocaust victims and harmonize it with the already existing Holocaust Remembrance Centre. The greatest proportion of the victims were Jews, but there were also Gypsies, Gays, Antisocialists, people with some kind of handicap, representatives of churches and last but not least those who were sent to the death camps because of their political and armed antifascist resistance fights – pointed out the leader of MEASZ. He also added that “with this it could be demonstrated how the guilty fascism poses a threat to everybody, unless one belongs to the narrow circle of “racially pure Aryans”.

According to Hanti, there is little chance of presenting the Holocaust of antifascist resistance fighters because “the present government, which is building new Horthysm” does not want to strengthen its own political opposition by presenting and commemorating the heroism of the antifascist resistance. That is why they quickly changed the street names that held the names of martyrs of the antifascist resistance fight, e.g. Endre Bajcsy-Zsilinszky, Barnabás Pesti, Endre Ságvári. “In order to avoid the further fuelling of the anti-Semitism sentiment and for the Holocaust project at the Józsefváros railway station to not become a target for different interest groups a broad social dialogue should be incorporated, along with the presentation of the Holocaust in the widest range” – stated the president of MEASZ.

Szakembereket a Holokauszt-megemlékezésekhez!” Ezért is cserélték le gyors ütemben a mártír antifasiszta ellenállókról (pl. Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Endre, Pesti Barnabás, Ságvári Endre) elnevezett utcaneveket is. "Pedig csak a széleskörű társadalmi párbeszéd, a Holokauszt széleskörű bemutatása során lehetne elkerülni, hogy a Józsefvárosi Pályaudvar 'Holokauszt-projektje' ne növelje tovább az antiszemitizmust, s ne legyen különféle érdekcsoportok céltáblája" - fogalmazott a MEASZ elnöke.
